Let's be honest: the marketing world is a little obsessed with hashtags. And fair enough—they're visible, they're trackable, and they feel like a concrete action you can take to boost reach. But if hashtags are the only metadata lever you're pulling, you're playing a very incomplete game.

I'd argue that some of the most powerful discoverability signals on the internet today have nothing to do with a pound sign. They live in places most creators never think to optimize—and because they're overlooked, they're also undercompetitive. That's an opportunity.

Here's a tour of the metadata that algorithms actually prioritize, platform by platform, and why ignoring it is quietly costing you reach.

LinkedIn: It's Not Just About the Hashtags in Your Posts

LinkedIn gets a lot of attention for its hashtag strategy—and rightly so, it's one of the few platforms where hashtags still carry significant algorithmic weight. But there's a layer of metadata on LinkedIn that most professionals completely ignore: the skills section, featured section labels, and article tags.

LinkedIn's algorithm uses profile metadata to determine content relevance and distribution. When you publish a post or article, the platform cross-references your profile's listed skills and expertise areas to decide which audiences it should surface your content to. A marketing consultant who has never filled out their skills section is essentially telling LinkedIn's algorithm, "I have no context for who I am—good luck."

Beyond that, LinkedIn articles have their own tagging system that functions independently from post hashtags. If you're publishing long-form content on the platform and not tagging those articles with relevant topics, you're missing a secondary discovery layer that LinkedIn actively uses to recommend content to users who follow those topics.

The fix: Audit your LinkedIn profile metadata at least quarterly. Make sure your skills, headline, and about section use the specific language your target audience searches for—not just your job title. Tag every article you publish. Treat your profile itself as a metadata document.

YouTube: Chapters Are the New Keywords

YouTube is the second-largest search engine in the world, and yet most creators optimize only their title, description, and tags—then call it a day. What they're missing is the growing importance of video chapters.

YouTube chapters (the timestamp markers you add to a video description) aren't just a user experience feature. They're metadata. Each chapter title is indexed by YouTube's search algorithm, which means a 20-minute video with 10 well-named chapters is essentially giving YouTube 10 additional keyword signals to match your content against search queries.

A digital marketing agency that tested this found that adding descriptive chapters to their existing YouTube library—without changing any other metadata—increased impressions by 22% over 90 days. The algorithm had more hooks to match their content against relevant searches.

The same logic applies to closed captions. Auto-generated captions are better than nothing, but manually uploaded transcripts are indexed more reliably and give you the opportunity to ensure accuracy. Every spoken keyword in your video becomes searchable metadata when you have a clean transcript.

The fix: Add chapters to every video longer than five minutes. Name them with search-intent language—not cute internal labels, but phrases your audience would actually type into a search bar.

TikTok: The Sound Layer Nobody Talks About

TikTok's algorithm is famously complex, but one signal that gets shockingly little attention from marketers is audio metadata. The sounds and songs you use in your videos carry their own discoverability weight.

When a sound is trending on TikTok, the platform actively surfaces content that uses it—including older videos—to users who have engaged with that sound before. This means a well-timed audio choice can extend the reach of your content well beyond its original post date. It's essentially a secondary hashtag that lives in the audio layer.

Beyond trending sounds, there's also the matter of original audio naming. When you post a TikTok with original audio—a voiceover, a jingle, a branded sound—you can name that audio clip. Most creators leave it as a default auto-generated name. But a descriptive, keyword-rich audio name makes your sound more discoverable to other creators who might use it, which then amplifies your reach every time they post with it.

The fix: Be intentional about audio selection. Use trending sounds when contextually appropriate. When posting original audio, give it a descriptive name that reflects your brand or content theme. Think of your audio choices as metadata decisions, not just aesthetic ones.

Pinterest: Boards Are Basically Category Tags

Pinterest is a search engine disguised as a social platform, and its metadata game runs deep. Most marketers know to use keywords in pin descriptions—but they underinvest in board titles and board descriptions, which function as category-level metadata that affects every pin saved to that board.

Pinterest's algorithm uses board context to determine pin relevance. A pin saved to a board called "Recipes" gets less algorithmic clarity than one saved to a board called "Easy Weeknight Dinner Recipes for Families." The more specific your board metadata, the better Pinterest can match your pins to relevant searches.

Board descriptions are even more neglected. Most Pinterest accounts leave them blank or fill them with vague copy. A keyword-rich board description—written the way a user would search, not the way a brand would speak—can meaningfully improve how often your pins surface in related searches.

The fix: Rename your boards with specific, search-intent language. Write genuine descriptions for each board using natural keyword phrases. Treat every board like a landing page that needs to rank.

The Bigger Picture: Metadata Is Everywhere

Spotify podcast descriptions, Apple Podcast categories, Substack tags, Medium publication topics, even the alt text you add to images on your website—all of it is metadata. All of it is indexed. And most of it is ignored by the majority of creators and brands competing in the same space as you.

The hashtag-only mindset made sense when hashtags were the primary discovery mechanism on most platforms. But algorithms have evolved. They're reading everything now—file names, captions, transcripts, audio, chapter titles, board descriptions, profile fields. Every one of those signals is a chance to get found.
